Tennessee Highway Safety Office Joins Tennessee Teen Safe Driving Coalition for Teen Driver Safety Week

Sonic Drive-In Locations Across Tennessee to Distribute 10,000 Teen Driver Safety Stickers Sponsored by AAA

TENNESSEE – On October 17, 2016, the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) will join the Tennessee Teen Safe Driving Coalition for a press event hosted by Sonic Drive-In to promote National Teen Driver Safety Week. Beginning Sunday, October 16, select Sonic Drive-In locations will distribute up to 10,000 stickers sponsored by AAA -- Auto Club Group. In celebration, THSO and the Coalition challenge Sonic-loving parents to post a selfie video on social media with the hashtag #TeensRockSafety to brag on ways they teach teen driver safety.

“The purpose of this sticker campaign is to spread awareness and reach parents of teen drivers,” said Julie Strike, Tennessee Coordinator for Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). “Car crashes are still the number-one killer of teens. Through driver safety education and greater parental support, we can reduce teen crashes across Tennessee.”

According to a recent report from the Governor’s Highway Safety Association, teen drivers are 1.6 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than adults. In 2015, fatalities involving teen drivers increased 10 percent. This year-to-date in Tennessee, 74 teen driver-involved fatalities were reported to the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security’s TITAN Division. For the same time period in 2015, that number was 59.
