Tennessee and Kentucky Partner for Hands Across the Border
Jellico, Tenn. – The Tennessee Highway Safety Office will join members of Tennessee Highway Patrol and Kentucky State Police to announce increased enforcement during the Hands Across the Border campaign. The event will take place Friday, May 13 at 12:00 p.m. at I-75 welcome center.
Kentucky and Tennessee have each seen an increase in traffic fatalities so far in 2016. Seat belt use continues to be an issue in both states, with approximately 45 percent of Tennessee’s fatalities and 52 percent of Kentucky’s fatalities being unbelted. The Knoxville district as a whole has seen a seven percent increase in fatalities with Knox County’s traffic fatalities having nearly doubled so far this year.
Each year, Tennessee partners with bordering states to crack down on traffic violators that are speeding, driving impaired, or not wearing a seat belt. Immediately following the press conference, law enforcement agencies in Tennessee and Kentucky will be performing saturation patrols in counties surrounding the state line from 2:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
