Grandmother of Landon Taylor Raises Awareness for Teen Distracted Driving
On Friday, August 19, the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) and law enforcement partners joined the Alabama Highway Patrol and North Alabama Highway Safety Office at the Genesis United Methodist Church in Hazel Green, Alabama, to announce “Hands Across the Border,” a multi-jurisdictional campaign to increase traffic safety enforcement from August 19 to Labor Day.
August 19 marks the nationwide launch of “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s mobilization against drunk driving. “Hands Across the Border” serves as a joint effort between Tennessee and Alabama to not only increase DUI enforcement but also seatbelt enforcement and distracted driving awareness.
Additionally, THSO and partners executed a memorial checkpoint in memory of 16-year-old Landon Taylor who passed away on July 6, 2016, in a fatal crash on Highway 50. Landon’s grandmother, Brenda Burns, spoke during the press conference to raise awareness for teen distracted driving.
